# How To Check Earthing Using Multi-meter And Test Lamp At Home

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. In this article, I will discuss how to check to an earthing using a multimeter, how to check an earthing using a test lamp, why earthing is provided at the house, etc. Each and everything I will try to explain in a simple way.

The earthing is necessary for all the homes, industries and shops. There are many types of earthing used nowadays, the use of a type of earthing depends on load, land, etc. There are many types of earthing such as pipe earthing, plate earthing, etc. The pipe and plate earthing are most commonly used.

Why Earthing Is Provided At Home?

The main purpose of earthing is to avoid leakage of current. Well, guys, suppose if your house does not have an earthing system, then if you give supply to the motor without earthing, suddenly if you touch the body of the motor then you will get an electric shock. This shock is due to the presence of leakage current. To avoid this leakage current an earthing is provided at home, industries, shops, etc.

Well, guys let's discuss how to check to an earthing using a multimeter and test lamp. First, i will discuss how to check to an earthing using a multimeter.

How To Check Earthing Using Multimeter?

Take a multimeter and set to 750 volts Ac.

Step 01

Step 02

After setting to 750 volts ac, insert the positive and negative terminals of multimeter into the socket. Insert the positive terminal in-phase and negative terminal in neutral.

Step 03

After inserting terminals, turn on the switch and check the voltage across phase and neutral.

Step 04

The voltage across phase and neutral is around 230 to 248 volts. Now let's see how to check an earthing.

To check an earthing, insert the negative terminal of multimeter in an earth pin.

Step 05

If the voltage across the earth pin and phase is the same as the voltage across neutral and phase, then we can say that an earthing is present at home. If the voltage across earth pin and phase is zero then it means earthing is not present.

In this manner, one can check an earthing using multimeter. Now let's see how to check an earthing using a test lamp.

Take a test lamp.

Step 01

First, check the supply in the socket by inserting the wires.

Step 02

Step 03

After checking the supply, simply insert the neutral wire of the lamp in the earth pin and observe if the lamp glows then it means the earthing is present at home. Suppose if the lamp does not glow then it means earthing is not present.

Step 04

Step 05

In this way, one can check the earthing using a test lamp.
