Types Of Batteries

Nowadays, batteries play a very important role in industry, colleges, schools, hospitals, etc. to provide energy to the loads during a power cut. The type of batteries used are Lead-Acid, Nickel Cadmium(Ni-Cd), Nickel-Metal Hydride(Ni-MH), Lithium, and Lithium-ion.

Advantages of Lead-Acid Battery

  1. It is one of the oldest rechargeable batteries.
  2. It is Rugged.
  3. It is safe, so used for domestic applications.
  4. The cost of lead-acid battery is low.
  5. Good over a large temperature range.

Disadvantages of Lead-Acid Battery

  1. It has low specific energy.
  2. It has a limited cycle life.
  3. It does not like full discharges.
  4. It must be stored with sufficient charge.
  5. The lead-acid battery produces gases, needs ventilation.

Applications of Lead-Acid Battery

  1. It is used in Vehicles. 
  2. It is used in boats. 
  3. It is used in UPS. 
  4. It is also used in cars. 
  5. It is used in wheelchairs. 

Nickel Cadmium(Ni-Cd)




Advantages of Nickel Cadmium(Ni-Cd)

  1. It is Rugged.
  2. The Nickel Cadmium battery is durable.
  3. It is good cold temperature performance battery.

Disadvantages of Nickel Cadmium Battery

  1. Cadmium is toxic.
  2.  It is prompted regulatory restriction 

Applications of Nickel Cadmium Battery

  1. It is used in Aircraft main battery.
  2. It is used in UPS in cold environments
  3. It is also used in vehicles needing a high cycle life.
  4. In power tools (not in consumer products). 

Nickel-Metal Hydride(Ni-MH)


Advantage of Nickel-Metal Hydride(Ni-MH)

  1. It has a 40% higher specific energy than NiCd. 
  2. The Nickel-Metal Hydride is mild toxicity. 

Disadvantages of Nickel-Metal Hydride(Ni-MH)

  1. It is not as rugged as NiCd.
  2. It is more difficult to charge.

Applications Of Nickel-Metal Hydride(Ni-MH)

  1. It was used in hybrid vehicles but now it is being replaced with Li-ion battery.

Lithium Batteries 


There are two types of Lithium Batteries:

  1. Lithium (metallic)
  2. Lithium-ion (intercalated lithium compound)  

Advantage Of Lithium Batteries

  1. Have higher energy and power density when compared to most battery chemistries. 
  2. Self-discharge is very slow.
  3. Theoretical voltage of 4.1V.
  4. Energy density of 400 Wh/L.
  5. Energy efficiency of 80%.
  6. Power density of 800+ W/L.

Disadvantage of Lithium Batteries



  1. Lithium can be corroded, which results in a loss of active material.
  2. Lithium plating, generally caused at low temperatures or voltages causes a loss in lithium.
  3. Very high initial cost.

  1. Defense
  2. Aerospace
  3. Instrumentation
  4. Oil drilling
  5. Mobile phones
  6. Laptops
  7. Power tools
  8. Electric powertrains
